Juneteenth is a holiday to commemorate the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. It started in Galveston, Texas in 1865 upon Major General Gordon Granger's proclamation of General Order Number 3 which enforced the freedom of enslaved peoples in Texas, two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and is now celebrated every year on June 19 across the United States.
Notes
Juneteenth is also known as Jubilee Day.
